Ameresco Wins Texas School ESPC

Energy efficiency and renewable energy company Ameresco Inc. has signed an energy savings performance contract with the McAllen Independent School District in Texas.

Ameresco has begun construction on energy efficiency measures at 39 facilities district-wide in McAllen. Once complete, the measures are expected to save the school district more than $1.2 million annually over the term of the contract and eliminate the production of 6,498 tons of carbon dioxide each year.

McAllen faces continuing state education budget reductions and a slowing economy, and its critical mechanical equipment has also reached the end of its useful life. This equipment has experienced an increasing failure rate, Ameresco said.

The company says that its ESPC was able to stretch McAllen ISD’s dollars into more than $16 million of infrastructure renewal. Planned improvements include:

  • A retrofit of 39,958 light fixtures
  • The installation of 4,494 automatic lighting controls
  • The installation of power management scripts for 10,000 computers
  • The installation of 121 internet-enabled programmable thermostats in portable buildings

In ESPCs – a key plank of the Obama administration’s recent directive to reduce energy costs in agency facilities – the savings on utility bills created through the facility upgrades are used to pay for the project over the term of the contract.

Ameresco participated in the nation’s largest ESPC in December, when it completed the Savannah River Site Biomass Cogeneration Facility in Aiken, S.C., on behalf of the Energy Department, in a contract worth $795 million.
