Cummins Inc. said that its engine line for North American trucking customers will meet the 2014 EPA/NHTSA fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) standards beginning in January 2013.
Cummins’ 2013 diesel and natural gas commercial vehicle engines are delivering up to a 2 percent fuel economy improvement over its current products through base engine improvements that reduce the parasitic load on the engine through high-efficiency water, fuel and lube pump systems, the company said.
The engines will continue to use high-pressure common rail fuel systems, VGT turbocharger and fully integrated electronics for improved combustion efficiency, the company said.
All commercial vehicle diesel engines – from the ISB6.7 to the ISX15 – feature the Cummins Emission Solutions EcoFit ultra-low emissions exhaust aftertreatment system, integrating a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). On-board diagnostics will be extended across the entire lineup, the engine maker said.
The Cummins Emission Solutions branch said it will demonstrate its new EcoFit aftertreatment systems, urea dosing and hydrocarbon dosing systems and other developments at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville beginning today.
Cummins will continue to offer its natural gas engine developed in a joint venture with Westport Innovations, the Cummins Westport ISL G. For 2013, it will introduce the Cummins Westport ISX12 G into full production, Cummins said.
The ISX15 G natural-gas engine will be based on Cummins’ ISX15 diesel engine and will have the capability to run on compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas or biomethane. The Cummins ISX15 G is expected to be in limited production by 2014, the company said.
Five ratings, from 330 to 400 hp. and 1,150 to 1,450 lbs.-ft. torque will be offered at launch, with production expected to begin in early 2013, Fleet Owner said.
