Liberty Paper Mill to Self-Power with Anaerobic Digester

Liberty Paper’s mill in Becker, Minn., is expected to completely self-power using a $15 million water pretreatment plant with bio-gas generator, writes the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The Liberty plant is an anaerobic digester that will capture methane from the 550,000 gallons of water used daily at the mill before the water is routed to the city’s industrial wastewater-treatment plant, the Star Tribune said.

The project is funded by several public and private investors including the St. Paul Port Authority, Xcel Energy, Sherburne County, the City of Becker and the Initiative Foundation, a regional resource on job creation and economic development, the paper said.

The mill, built in 1995 and part of the Liberty Diversified International family, manufactures 100 percent recycled paper from more than 200,000 tons of old corrugated containers each year, according to the LPI website.

Liberty Paper general manager Larry Newell told the Star Tribune that the paper mill worked closely with the county and city before locating the new paper mill in Becker, since the mill would need a facility to process its water. Newell said that the city of Becker built a treatment plant to bring in the mill.

The county expects that on-site water pretreatment at the mill will ease the burden on the city’s waste water-treatment plant, the Star Tribune said.
