Renewables Briefing: Eagles Stadium Installation, U.S. Army $7b RFP, Gatwick Airport

The Philadelphia Eagles and NRG will install a 3 MW system of solar panels and micro wind-turbines at the Lincoln Financial Field, a project that when completed in December will make the stadium a top green project in the NFL and the city of Philadelphia, the companies said.

The U.S. Army Engineering & Support Center in Huntsville, Ala., issued a draft RFP for $7 billion in shared capacity contracts for renewable and alternative energy through purchase power agreements or other equivalent mechanisms. The $7 billion is for the purchase of energy for up to 30 years from the constructed power plants with projects less than 4 MW currently reserved for small businesses, writes Renewable Energy World. Comments on the draft are accepted till March 27.

Gatwick Airport has a new 50 kW PV solar system, expected to reduce  25 tons of CO2 emissions per year for the facility. The system, installed by UK group Orta Solar, has met the safety guidelines of NATS (the National Air Traffic Service) and the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) in order to assure that the system did not interfere with ground radar transmissions or produce dangerous glare, Airport International News said.

Waitrose Stratford City in London, a supermarket overlooking the Olympic Park, has been awarded the world’s first Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Outstanding rating for a retail building. The supermarket runs off-grid using an energy center located at the shopping mall for its heating and cooling requirements, and also uses water-cooled, propane-based refrigeration which reduce energy demand by 25 percent, the company said.

Abound Solar, a manufacturer of thin-film cadmium telluride PV modules, said that it will cease production of its first-generation solar module in order to focus resources on the manufacturing process and equipment changes needed for production of its next generation high-efficiency module. The shift cuts 180 jobs from its Colorado facilities. The high efficiency AB2 85 watt module has a NREL-verified 12.5 percent solar efficiency, the company said.
