Standards & Compliance Briefing: IgCC, LEED Milestone, Energy Efficiency Standards, U.S. Army Drops LEED

The ICC has released the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC), the first model code that includes sustainability measures for the entire construction project and its site. The new code, released with cooperating sponsors American Institute of Architects (AIA), ASTM International, ASHRAE, USGBC and IES, is expected to make buildings more efficient, reduce waste, and improve oversight, ICC said.

USGBC announced that commercial project no. 12,000 has earned LEED certification, a significant milestone since the program launch in 2000. The 12,000th project is the LEED Gold Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge building in Texas, rebuilt after the original facility was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008. In total, there are more than 137,000 LEED registered and certified projects around the world, USGBC said.

ANSI will host an exploratory meeting to examine the need for an Energy Efficiency Standards Panel to develop a standardization roadmap for U.S. energy efficiency initiatives, on April 25 in Washington D.C. The meeting aims to define the scope and areas of focus – e.g., standards, codes, and conformance programs – for a potential standards panel to advance the nation’s energy efficiency agenda, ANSI said.

The U.S. Army is launching its own building code modeled off of ASHRAE 189.1 in lieu of pursuing LEED certification. Previously, all new construction projects were required to meet LEED Silver or an equivalent standard or to comply with the five principles of High Performance Sustainable Buildings, writes Green Building Law Update.

Vantage Data Centers announced that its second Santa Clara data center, V2, has been awarded LEED Platinum certification. To date, all of Vantage’s facilities have been constructed to meet LEED Platinum requirements, and V2, which can scale from its current 9MW configuration to 18MW within the same physical footprint, is the 13th LEED Platinum certified data center in the world, the company said.

West Oahu residential community Kaupuni Village, constructed by Hunt Companies, has achieved LEED Platinum certification. Hunt said that it is also the nation’s first net-zero affordable housing project, planned and developed by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands as a model for its future developments.

Solar manufacturer REC has launched a REC Solar Professional certification program for solar installers that includes a two-year extension to the regular REC product warranty if installed by professionals completing the course. More than 100 installers in six countries are already certified, REC said.

U.K.-based vehicle hire and fleet provider Northgate Vehicle Hire has been awarded ISO 14001 accreditation. The company said that it intends to continue efforts to reduce its impact on the environment, and plans an employee engagement program next, writes Fleet News.

Semiconductor material manufacturer Soitec, headquartered in Bernin, France, announced that it has been awarded new certifications from the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) based on an audit conducted at the end of 2011. The company now holds ISO/TS 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications.
