Bayer Healthcare Installs 295 kW Solar Carport

SolarCity has completed a 295 kW solar installation at Bayer Healthcare’s manufacturing facilities in Berkeley, Calif. It’s the largest solar project in the city, according to the California Solar Initiative’s database.

Bayer expects the system to reduce its CO2 emissions by more than 100 pounds over the next 20 years.

SolarCity financed, designed and installed the 1,000-panel project, and will provide ongoing maintenance and monitoring. The company integrated the PV panels into a carport, so in addition to providing electricity, the solar system provides shade for Bayer employees’ vehicles.

This project is SolarCity’s largest commercial project in Berkeley, where one of the company’s 25 locations employs about 50 installers, project designers and warehouse managers.

Earlier this month, SolarCity partnered with Campus Crest Communities, a “purpose-built” student housing developer, to install more than 9,000 solar panels on student housing facilities in Greeley, Colo., Flagstaff, Ariz., and Las Cruces, N.M. The solar panels will provide more than 2.3 million kWh of renewable power annually, offset the housing complexes’ electricity consumption by about 50 percent and eliminate more than 80 million pounds of annual carbon dioxide emissions.

In April, Walmart announced that Colorado stores were contracting with SolarCity for six solar projects totaling 2 MW. When complete the Colorado arrays are expected to generate nearly 3 million kWh of renewable energy per year. The solar projects will prevent more than 5 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year, Walmart says.

In September 2011, Bayer said it had saved more than a million gallons of water since January with a wastewater treatment system at its animal health division headquarters in Shawnee, Kan.
