Standards & Compliance Briefing: SCS Biofuel, Energy Star Health Care, EMerge, Climate Action Reserve

Scientific Certification Systems said that it is the first US certification body to be accredited by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification biofuel certification system. SCS is now approved to conduct biofuel certifications, and ISCC Plus certification for food, animal feed and derivative chemicals produced from any feedstock. The certification qualifies biofuels sold into the EU for recognition under the renewable energy directive EU RED.

My Sustainable Canada and the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care have launched a program for energy efficiency in Canada’s health services sector. The Energy Star Health Care Energy Leadership Program – HELP – is a voluntary program that aims to educate executives, facility operators, food and laundry service managers and others about potential energy efficiency savings, the coalition said.

The EMerge Alliance – an industry association promoting safe DC power distribution standards for commercial buildings – has formed a Campus Microgrid Technical Standards Committee chaired by the director of Intel’s Energy Research and Sustainability Labs. The committee will work on improved efficiency for integrated on-site power generation, storage, distribution and energy use within a building or campus, the association said.

Carbon offset registry the Climate Action Reserve said it is now accepting submissions for GHG emissions reduction projects under California’s cap-and-trade protocols, while it undergoes the application process to become a California Air Resources Board (ARB) accredited offset project registry. Project owners and developers may submit project documents for a review of their adherence to ARB’s adopted offset protocols.

UL Environment has launched EPD Transparency Brief, a single-page supplement to the Environmental Product Declaration, which manufacturers can use to provide a summary of a product’s lifecycle-based environmental impact information. The new fact sheet was developed in collaboration with architecture firm Perkins+Will, carpet tile manufacturer Interface, and other construction industry users of EPD labels, and is available for use by any manufacturer whose product has earned a UL Environment Certified EPD.

UK energy and facilities management company GSH Group has earned its ISO 50001 energy management systems certification. The company said it also holds ISO 9000, ISO 14000, and OHSAS 18001 certification, writes Industry Today.

The 1.1-million-sq.-ft. Qatar National Convention Center and Exhibition Hall has earned LEED Gold certification for new construction, the first facility in the country to achieve the standard. Features of the building include an on-site PV array that produces 12 percent of the facility’s energy requirements, cool roofing, a greywater capture system fed by low-flow showers, fixtures and sinks, and use of locally sourced building materials, writes the Gulf Times.

Philippines-based Siam Cement Group has earned LEED Gold operations and management certification for its corporate headquarters after a recent renovation project. The company said that the project also won the Thai Energy Award in the retrofitted building category, and was the first runner-up in the same category at the Asean Best Practice for Energy Efficient Building Awards in 2011, GMA News said.
