UL Environment now offers three new environmental claim validation services designed to help companies communicate efforts to reduce landfill waste. Zero Waste to Landfill, Virtually Zero Waste to Landfill, and Landfill Waste Diversion claim validations recognize companies that divert in the range of 80 percent to 100 percent of their waste, the company said.

The Forest Stewardship Council has recognized Resolute Forest Products, formerly AbitibiBowater, as the largest manager of FSC-certified forests in the world. The company said that is was previously a target of organizations like Greenpeace, and that it has made environmental sustainability a core tenet of operations.

The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association has reported that 41 commercial and institutional furniture manufacturers now have more than 1,800 furniture products certified in its level program. The standard was developed with ANSI and is awarded to office furniture products that meet criteria for product manufacturing and supply chain, the association said.

Corporate relocation services provider AIReS has updated its ISO 14001 certification with an Unconditional Approval rating, meaning zero negative findings and continued certification for another year. The company said that it has held the ISO standard since 2007.

Russian steelmaker Novolipetsk Steel has successfully passed an audit of its EMS to earned its ISO 14001. TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH conducted the audit. Among the units reviewed were its sinter plant, coke and by-product plant, BF shops, BOF shops, rolling shops and auxiliary shops, writes Steel Guru.

Energy and facilities management consultants GSH Group has obtained ISO 50001 certification for energy management systems. The company said that it is the first in its sector to earn ISO 9000, ISO 14000, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 50001, writes Industry Today.

Berlin-based procurement company SolarBuyer and testing facility PI-Photovoltaik Institute Berlin AG have partnered to provide PV module procurement, quality assurance and product testing services. The new partnership enables SolarBuyer to offer verified module procurement services for project developers, including field performance testing independent of certification criteria, the companies said.

Apparel manufacturer VDS Group’s new Bangladesh-based facility Vintage Denim Studio Limited has earned LEED Platinum certification. The 300,000-sq.-ft. denim factory is the first LEED-certified facility in the country, and VDS expects it to achieve water savings of 46 percent and energy savings of 45 percent, UL said.

Denver Zoo’s Toyota Elephant Passage animal exhibit, a 10-acre, 10-building complex, has achieved LEED Platinum certification. The zoo said that it reached its goal with the use of renewable energy, recycled water, natural daylight and ventilation, and efficient heating and cooling systems.

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s newest building, the 200,000-sq.-ft. Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building, has earned LEED Gold certification. The facility’s sustainability features include use of 24 percent recycled content, diversion of 72 percent of construction-generated materials through reuse, recycle and salvage, and 93 percent reflective roofing, writes the New Mexico Business Weekly.

The USGBC announced that more than 20,000 US homes are now certified through the LEED for Homes program. Homes tallied include multi- to single-family, and there are 79,000 additional units in line for certification.
