The installation of Telkonet’s EcoSmart suite of energy management products cut Lewiston, Maine, Ramada Conference Center’s HVAC runtime costs by 40 percent.

Telkonet provided EcoInsight and EcoWave intelligent thermostats as well as EcoView occupancy sensors for the Thayer Corporation to install in guestrooms. The company’s wireless ZigBee modules in each thermostat allow the units to communicate through walls and ceilings. To prevent housekeeping or maintenance from tripping sensors in unoccupied spaces, thermostats can enter an “unsold” status from the EcoCentral management platform to prevent units from turning off and on unnecessarily, the company said.

Thayer, a commercial HVAC provider, also installed EcoSmart energy management technology on four rooftop units, to control equipment runtime in the lobby, dining area, lounge and portions of the hotel’s conference facilities.

Thayer completed the installation in November of 2011. With travelers spending only 35 percent of their hotel stay in the guestrooms, the Ramada avoided 71,734 hours of excessive HVAC runtime and saved 144,553 kWh of energy over six months. With commercial electric rates in Maine at 11.64 cents/kWh according to the U.S. Energy Information Association, the saved kWh hours add up to considerable savings for the property, Telkonet said.

According to the EPA, the kWh saved by the Ramada with EcoSmart is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 2,556 tree seedlings grown for 10 years, or taking 19 passenger vehicles off the road for an entire year.

In May, Telkonet announced that it was installing its EcoSmart energy management platform in five Denihan Hospitality Group hotels in Manhattan. The Benjamin, Affinia Gardens, Affinia Dumont, Affinia Shelburne and Affinia 50 can expect upwards of 30 percent energy savings, the company said.

In January, Telkonet won a contract to provide energy management solutions in 10 Southern California-based hospitality properties through Pacific Energy Services & Facilities Inc. And in August 2011, it installed its EcoSmart platform at Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers’ Westin Alexandria Hotel in Alexandria, Va. At that hotel, the EcoSmart platform controls water source heat pumps in each of the 341 rooms and seven suites.
