Interbrand’s 2012 Best Global Green Brands report evaluates and ranks companies on their environmental performance as well as the public’s perception of their green credentials.
The 2012 report aims to examine the gap that exists between corporate environmental practices and consumer perception of those practices using performance data provided by Deloitte, consumer research and the Best Global Green Brands analysis from the previous year, Interbrand said.
Automotive and technology brands dominated the ranking this year. Toyota maintained its No. 1 spot by continuing to make environmental sustainability a core management priority, Interbrand said.
The Japanese carmaker was praised for expanding its original Prius hydrid model into an entire family of sustainable vehicles, including the company’s first plug-in model. Toyota also achieved near-zero landfill status at all of its North American manufacturing plants this year, and continues to build LEED-certified buildings and dealerships, Interbrand said.
Eight automotive brands appear in this year’s Best Global Green Brands report and four of those, including Toyota, Honda, Volkswagon and BMW, were in the top 10.
Nissan appeared in the report for the first time, largely due to its new six-year environmental action plan that aims to reduce its carbon footprint, and the positive public perception it earned through the development of an easier-to-install electric vehicle quick charger and pilot programs to make cities EV-ready.
Other first-time entrants to the global green brands list include Swedish clothing retailer H&M, which debuted at 46, and financial firm UBS, ranked 50 on the list. Although UBS emerged as the largest financial supporter of mountaintop removal mining in the US, the brand saw a slight increase in its environmental performance score, particularly in its operations, Interbrand said.
Danone, Ford, Starbucks and global shipping company UPS improved their rankings the most since the previous year. Danone moved up from the No. 14 to break into the top 10. Starbucks, at No. 36, and UPS, at 43, both moved up six spots from the previous year.
