Intel has placed first and Microsoft second in the EPA’s first-time ranking of tech companies’ green power use.

The EPA publishes the Green Power Partnership rankings quarterly, and Intel is a perennial winner. The company, which uses about 2.8 billion kWh of green power annually — 89 percent of the company’s nationwide electricity use — has ranked No. 1 on the Top 50 list since 2008. It also places first on the list of Fortune 500 green power partners.

Intel also has the strongest environmental governance, policies and infrastructure among major US firms, according a report published earlier this summer by sustainability consultants Soyka & Company.

Following Intel and Microsoft on the tech and telecoms list, Cisco Systems ranks third, Sprint fourth, Dell fifth and Google sixth.

After appearing on the EPA’s rankings for the first time last quarter, Microsoft maintained its third-place spot on the National Top 50 list. The Top 50’s top five green power partners didn’t change, with Intel and Kohl’s maintaining their long-time first and second place rankings, Walmart’s California and Texas facilities in fourth and Whole Foods Markets in fifth place (see chart).

The top retail green power producers list stayed the same, too, with Kohl’s, Walmart’s California and Texas facilities, Whole Foods, Staples and Starbucks taking the top five spots for a second quarter.

Kohl’s, which also ranks second among Fortune 500 partners, is the first-place 100 percent green power user, according to the EPA’s rankings, with 1.5 kWh billion annually. Whole Foods and the City of Austin rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, on the list of 100 percent green power purchasers.

Walmart’s California and Texas Facilities, BMW Manufacturing’s Greer, S.C. facilities and Coca-Cola Refreshments produce the largest amount of on-site green power annually from biogas, solar and wind.
