Walgreen Co. has disclosed in its July 12 SEC filing that the company has been served with a civil complaint alleging certain violations of California’s hazardous waste regulations.
The alleged violations are related to the proper disposal of various materials from its retail stores, and the suit seeks injunctive relief, civil penalties and certain fees and expenses.
Several California district attorneys filed the complaint in the Alameda County Superior Court in early July, Walgreens said, noting that SEC regulations require disclosure of environmental matters when a governmental authority is a party to the proceedings and monetary sanctions could exceed $100,000.
The company said that it intends to work with state and local officials to resolve the allegations. The SEC filing sounded a hopeful note on the case, with management saying that based on their current knowledge, they do not expect “reasonably possible losses” to be material to the company’s financial position.
In other news, Walgreens has upgraded its lighting at 80 percent of its nationwide locations, or about 7,000 stores, in a partnership with GE Lighting, The upgrade used color accurate and energy-efficient GE F25 T8 linear fluorescent tubes, GE said.
The new linear fluorescent fixtures are expected to increase energy efficiency by nine percent and extend re-lamp cycles by 10 percent. The store locations achieved greater energy efficiency by switching from 28-watt to 25-watt fluorescent tubes, GE said.
Walgreens was one of dozens of organizations that committed to invest nearly $2 billion of private capital to upgrade energy performance by at least 20 percent by 2020 across 1.6 billion square feet of buildings, as part of President Obama’s Better Buildings Challenge.
