Hilton DoubleTree Hotel Installs 100kW CHP

DoubleTree Hotel at Tarrytown, NYThe DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown, NY, has installed a combined heat and power system that is expected to reduce its carbon emissions by about 403 tons per year.

American DG Energy owns and operates the 100kW system, which produces electricity, space heat and hot water.

According to the $2 million contract, the 247-room hotel pays a discounted rate on its energy used — DoubleTree doesn’t pay any capital, installation or operating costs — over the 15-year term.

In April, Hilton Hotel, DoubleTree’s parent company, installed a green roof and a 1.75MW CHP system at the Hilton New York – Manhattan’s largest hotel. That cogeneration system is expected to provide 50 percent of the hotel’s electrical power and more than 40 percent of its steam consumption for heating and hot water requirements. It consists of seven natural gas-fired, 250 kW energy modules manufactured by California-based SDP Energy.

The same month, the hotel chain announced its Doubletree Dunblane Hydro hotel in Scotland would install a CHP system under an agreement with EuroSite Power.

Hilton is one of 12 international hotel companies trying to create a single methodology for calculating carbon footprints and emissions.

Last year another of the 12 hotel chains, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, restored its Savoy hotel, adding several environmental features include a CHP plant.

  1. It is great to see the DoubleTree Hotel brand continue to lead sustainable hospitality. This combined heat and power system installed at the DoubleTree Tarrytown is another example of how Hilton, and its brands, are making changes to decrease its environmental impact. As an on-site furniture asset management company that has worked with DoubleTree Hotels to refinish, remanufacture and reupholster existing furniture pieces, we have first-hand experience understanding this budget- and environmental-consciousness brand. We look forward to more hotels following in DoubleTree’s steps to implement more sustainable initiatives.
