Portland and Dallas have been named as the two most electric vehicle-ready cities in the US, by EV software developer Xatori.
The cities have 11.1 and 10.6 public EV charging locations per 100,000 residents respectively, according to the companies. The remaining cities in the top ten, in order, are Nashville, Tenn.; the San Francisco Bay Area; Seattle; Orlando, Fla.; Austin, Texas; Tucson, Ariz.; Honolulu and the Washington, D.C., area.
The data is drawn from user data compiled by Xatori’s PlugShare and GreenCharge mobile applications. Information from the applications has been used to calculate other EV driver behavior.
According to the data, average users drive 1,050 miles and spend about $30 on charging per month. Drivers save about $75 in fuel costs and 360 lbs of CO2 emissions per month, Xatori said – although it didn’t say in comparison to what.
Additional information from PlugShare shows that the majority of charging is taking place at home from 220/240 volt outlets, according to GreenTechMedia. The web site says that 60 percent of EV users never charge at work, compared to just 3 percent who never charge at home.
PlugShare is an EV mobile and web application designed to help people find and share public and private EV charging stations. The app has grown its charging network to more than 100,000 users and 11,000 charging stations across North America – from an initial 500 stations when the service launched last year, Xatori says. Earlier this month, clean electric transportation and storage technologies provider ECOtality said that it will offer its Blink smart charging stations free to commercial host sites and residents of Chicago, Atlanta and the greater Philadelphia area. The offer forms part of the company’s expansion of The EV Project, a public-private research initiative with the Department of Energy aimed at developing a national EV infrastructure.
Also in August, Houston launched a municipal electric vehicle sharing program, which will equip 50 city-owned cars with Zipcar’s online reservation and vehicle access system. Through the Houston Fleet Share program, 50 city-owned electric and hybrid vehicles, including 25 Nissan Leaf EVs, will be outfitted with Zipcar’s car sharing technology for use by city employees.
