Standards & Compliance Briefing: CarbonFix, R2, ISO 50001, ISO 14001, LEED

The Rainforest Alliance announced that Canadian group CO2 Environment has the first validated CarbonFix project in North America. CO2 Environment projects aim to reforest degraded lands in order to obtain carbon credits. Located in the greater metropolitan area of Montreal, the project covers 270.8 acres and has the potential to sequester a total of 41,890 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, Rainforest Alliance said.

Las Vegas-based US Micro Corp. has received R2 Responsible Recycling Practices and ISO 14001 certifications for its Atlanta facility after an audit conducted by Perry Johnson Registrars. The audits evaluated and tested US Micro’s policies governing waste management, data security, employee health and safety, public health and the environment as well as chain of custody processes, Recycling Today said.

German machine construction company Arburg has received its ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certification, in an audit conducted by TÜV SUD. Arburg says that it aims to manufacture its energy-efficiency labeled injection molding machines in an energy-efficient production system. Arburg’s facility also uses geothermal energy, photovoltaics, block-type thermal power plants, rain water, wind power and production-generated heat as well as natural ventilation and extraction, Metal Powder Report said.

The 202-room Shangri-La Hotel in Tokyo has been awarded Integrated Management System certification from ISO after adding the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications to its ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System certificate which the company earned in 2009. Shangri-La is the first hotel in Japan to achieve the IMS international standard, in an audit conducted by TQCS International, 4-traders writes.

Dubai-based interior design and fit-out contractor Fino International has been awarded three certifications in an audit conducted by TÜV SUD. Fino received ISO 9001 for its quality management systems, ISO 14001 for its environmental management systems, and OHSAS 18001 for occupational health and safety standards, Construction Week Online said.

The US Consulate General in Dubai has earned LEED Gold certification. The facility is designed to reduce energy costs by 22 percent using a white roof, light-colored façade and sun shades, and to use 41 percent less water than the performance requirements of US policy. The building also harvests solar energy to heat water, and uses variable frequency drives for pumps, fans, and motors, Construction Week Online said.

Power supplies and power electronics provider GlobTek has renewed ISO 14001 for its environmental management system and ISO 9001 for quality management system certification, and other ISO certifications related to medical device quality, Embedded Computing said.
