Standards & Compliance Briefing: Hydraulic Fracturing, SFI, Green Globe, LEED, ISO 14001

A newly formed ASTM International subcommittee will address the need for consensus standards in the field of hydraulic fracturing. Subcommittee D18.26 on Hydraulic Fracturing, part of the committee on soil and rock, will bring together stakeholders to develop ASTM D18.26: Ensuring Safe and Efficient Extraction to promote best practices in hydraulic fracturing operations and protect environmental resources, the organization said.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed an executive order that promotes the use of products from responsibly managed forests in Georgia in state construction, including those certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, the American Tree Farm System, and the Forest Stewardship Council. It is the fifteenth state to recognize a broad range of forest certifications, SFI said.

Boeing Co. opened its new chemical processing center and building expansion in Greshm, Ore., and has received LEED Gold certification for the 64,000-square-foot processing facility. The new center replaces a chemical processing tank line that began operation in the early 1960s, the Portland Business Journal said.

Mubadala real estate company in Abu Dhabi has earned LEED Gold for Core and Shell pre-certification for Sowwah Square – a 450,000-sq.-meter mixed-use development under construction on the 105-hectare Al Maryah Island. When complete, the island will be the site of Abu Dhabi’s new central business district, and Sowwah Square will host the new headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX), four commercial towers, several luxury hotels and about 33,000 square meters of retail and dining space, Green Prophet writes.

The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation has received the ISO 14001 certification for its regional headquarters located in London. The company earned the environmental management system performance standard for its increased standards for environmental performance and for helping to manage environmental risk, 4-traders.com writes.

Solar panel manufacturer Senersun said that its polycrystalline modules have passed the salt mist corrosion test in compliance with IEC 61701 standards. SGS conducted the testing. Complying with IEC 61701 standards indicates that the solar panels withstand salt-laden humidity and rain as found in coastal regions and marine environments, the company said.

The Blue Horizons Garden Resort in Grenada has earned Green Globe certification for sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism businesses. In the past year, the resort has reduced its overall energy consumption by 5 percent, water consumption by 9 percent, and waste by 15 percent, writes Global Industry Travel News.

NetSurvey Ltd has recently passed audits for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards in a certification process conducted by Intertek. NetSurvey is part of the MMT Group, a marine survey company which provides quality of hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical services.
