Standards & Compliance Briefing: ISO 50001, Uniform Terminology for Air Quality, ISO 14001, LEED

Management systems certifier UL DQS has earned its ISO 50001 Energy Management System program accreditation with the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB). UL DQS is one of only two organizations globally to attain this accreditation. UL DQS conducted the Schneider Electric corporate witness audit, which was a critical phase in the ANAB accreditation process, the company said.

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers has completed ANSI/ASABE S588, Uniform Terminology for Air Quality. The new standard establishes uniformity in terms used in the field of rural air quality and serves as a resource for new terms and definitions. It supplements existing ASTM standards and provides consensus definitions for more than 180 terms, the association said.

Polydrug Laboratories in Mumbai, India, has earned its Integrated Management System certification, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. The Global Manager Group said it provided ISO certification consultancy services for the drug manufacturer, including the audit.

Community Development Corporation’s new 85-unit complex Residences at Eastport in Knoxville, Tenn., has earned LEED Platinum certification. The project, built with Eastport Architects and general contractor Denark Construction, includes the use of renewable building materials; energy-efficient lighting and appliances; water conservation; high-efficiency HVAC, plumbing and irrigation systems; surface water management and construction waste management, writes Knox News.

Stony Brook University‘s new student dormitories have earned LEED Gold certification. The 173,000-sq.-ft. Nobel Halls are the first SBU residence halls to gain such recognition. The rooms have individual temperature control and sensors that automatically lower air conditioning when unoccupied to reduce energy use. The buildings were constructed with nontoxic adhesives and paints and with materials that were recycled and locally manufactured, Newsday said.

The Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City, Utah, received LEED Gold certification of its new visitors center. This is the aviary’s second gold-certified building and adds to the organization’s portfolio of environmentally sensitive practices. The visitors center was completed by Big-D Construction and AJC Architects in December 2011, incorporating bird-safety window features, pre-cleansing and retention systems for roof storm water, and a rooftop PV solar system, the construction company said.

Property services, asset management and maintenance services provider UGL Services said that it has contributed eight green cleaning credits for the National Geographic headquarters building. The 899,000 sq. ft. three-building campus earned a LEED Silver for Existing Buildings recertification with 59 LEED credits, the company said.
