The 2012 GreenChill Environmental Achievement Awards are part of the EPA partnership program that works with about 8,000 stores, representing more than 20 percent of the supermarket industry. According to the EPA, a typical food retail store leaks about 1,000 pounds of refrigerant annually.
GreenChill partners, on the other hand, have refrigerant emissions rates about 50 percent lower than the EPA-estimated industry average. The EPA estimates that if supermarkets nationwide reduced their emissions to the GreenChill average emissions rate, the industry would eliminate the equivalent of 22 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
For the fourth time in GreenChill’s five-year history, Giant Eagle won the program’s best emissions rate award for achieving the lowest corporate-wide emissions rate of all GreenChill supermarket companies. The EPA said it didn’t have company permission to disclose this rate to the media.
Albertsons’ Carpinteria store earned GreenChill’s best certified store award for being the first in the nation to use only low global warming potential refrigerants.
Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market won the store certification excellence award given to the partner that achieved the most GreenChill store certifications in the past year. It earned 23. In March, the company earned GreenChill Platinum-Level store certification for use of green refrigeration technology at its new store in Folsom, Calif. The facility installed Hillphoenix Second Nature medium temperature fixtures and walk-ins running on glycol, and low temperature fixtures and walk-ins running on C02.
Hillphoenix, the Conyers, Ga.-based company that manufactures commercial refrigerated food display cases and application systems, won the store certification excellence award for non-supermarket partners. This award — being given for the first time in 2012 — goes to the commercial systems manufacturer that achieves the most GreenChill certified advanced refrigeration systems in the past year.
Other 2012 award winners:
- Albertsons parent company SUPERVALU won the distinguished partner (supermarket) award.
- Hillphoenix’s David Hinde won the distinguished partner (non-supermarket) award for his research and development work on commercial technologies that use low-GWP refrigerants.
- Buehler’s Fresh Foods won the most-improved emissions rate award and superior goal achievement, also for its emissions reductions work.
- Hy-Vee, McQuade’s Marketplace, Whole Foods and Weis Markets also won superior goal achievement awards for achieving emissions reduction goals this past year.
Whole Foods and Albertsons were among last year’s GreenChill award winners.
