Green Fleet Roundup: Ford Fusion 2013, AT&T Park, 99 Cents Only, Voith Turbo, TomTom

Ford has this week launched its 2013 Fusion (pictured), which was named as America’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan. The EPA certified the car’s hybrid model to deliver 47 mpg city, 47 mpg highway, 47 mpg combined. This beats the Toyota Camry by 8 mpg highway and 4 mpg city, Ford says.

The Fusion is available with five engine options including two EcoBoost engines and hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The company has also announced that the hybrid model’s newly introduced lithium-ion battery is lighter, more efficient and more powerful that the battery it replaces and should reduce Ford’s use of rare earth metals by up to 500,000 pounds annually.

The City of San Francisco, the San Francisco Giants, ChargePoint and ABM have unveiled four electric vehicle charging stations at AT&T Park. The stadium is the first ballpark in California to offer public access to Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations, which can charge an EV in four hours, or about the length of a baseball game.

Ryder System announced it has been selected by 99 Cents Only Stores to provide a full service lease for 40 compressed natural gas tractors to replace diesel tractors in the retailer’s fleet. The natural gas-powered vehicles were made available through Ryder’s natural gas vehicle project with the San Bernardino Associated Governments in Southern California, and will replace the majority of the retail chain’s current delivery fleet. The contract with 99 Cents Only Stores is Ryder’s single largest lease agreement for CNG vehicles to date.

German transmissions specialist Voith Turbo is launching a more efficient gear box specifically designed for the bus market. The DIWA.6 will also reduce noise emissions and have better thermal stability than previous models, reports European Motor News. The transmission is designed for double- and single-decker buses as well as the midi-bus market.

TomTom has announced an incentive program in conjunction with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority aimed at helping New York commercial and government fleet operators improve fleet productivity and fuel efficiency. In partnership with the New York State Department of Transportation, NYSERDA is providing $250,000 in funding toward this program. This funding allows participating New York State businesses to receive subsidies of up to $350 per vehicle to save nearly 50 percent off the regular price of TomTom WORKsmart, a GPS navigation and fleet management product designed to improve fleet productivity and reduce fuel consumption.
