Newark’s Penn Station, which serves more than 26,000 commuters every day, and over 700,000 Amtrak travelers every year, has updated its air handler system to take into consideration both air conditioning in the Summer, and heat in the Winter.

On Site Energy rents 20 ton air handlers that are silent, compact, and portable.

NJ Transit rented several 20 ton air handlers from On Site Energy and placed them in the common areas of the station. The water lines already available in the station provided both chilled water, and hot water.

After using the air handlers for 30 days, NJ Transit purchased four of them which are now used 24 hours a day, all year long.

On Site Energy says its portable air handlers have been used in many applications where a central physical plant provides a loop of chilled water and hot water to a collection of buildings or spaces. The company says that when chilled water or hot water is readily available, using 20 ton air handlers vastly reduces the power requirement (as compared to using DX air conditioners or electric heat).
