Standards & Compliance Briefing: IEEE Smart Grid, UL 2755 for Data Centers, ISO 50001, LEED, ISO 14001

Five new IEEE standards activities address a variety of communications and operational needs for current and future smart grids. Four standards are updates — IEEE 1815, IEEE 1366, IEEE 1377, IEEE C37.104. The IEEE P1854 – Guide for Smart Distribution Applications is new, the association said.

Modular data center technology and services provider IO has earned the industry’s first-ever modular data center safety certification from Underwriters Laboratories. The UL certification is based on the new UL 2755 which is the world’s first comprehensive safety standard for modular data centers. It covers installation of servers in a modular data center and safety of the data center’s power distribution, cooling systems and smoke/fire protection, IO said.

The Lecta Group announces that four of its Torraspapel’s Almazán self-adhesive mills in Spain has achieved ISO 50001 energy management system certification. The new standard adds to the mills holdings of ISO 14001 and EMAS Environmental Certifications, FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody certifications, Lecta said.

Otis Elevator Company, a unit of United Technologies Corp., has opened a new LEED Gold certified facility in Chongqing, China. Under the factory’s LEED standards, 90 percent of the waste generated during the construction phase of the factory was recycled and carbon emissions were reduced through a monitoring system and adoption of environmentally sensitive materials, the company said.

Fore Property Company said that its 226-unit community of Groveton Green Apartments in Owings Mills, Ma., is the first LEED Gold apartment development in the Owings Mills area. Features of the complex include energy efficient windows, Energy Star appliances and lights, high efficiency HVAC units, enhanced insulation, and low VOC paints.

The renovated Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired administration and activities building in Richmond, Va., has earned LEED Gold certification – the agency’s first LEED certified project. Energy reduction strategies included highly-efficient mechanical and lighting systems and an upgraded building envelope. All heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment and associated controls were replaced with a new variable system with energy recovery technology, project designers Moseley Architects said.

Zollner Elektronik’s Milpitas, Calif.-based manufacturing center has successfully registered its environmental management system to the ISO 14001 standard. The company said it adopted measures to improve energy efficiency from the design and construction phase of the facility, EMS Now reports.
