Standards & Compliance Briefing: National Zoo, LEED, Energy Star for UPS

The National Zoo’s American Trail has opened its new animal conservation and sustainability-themed exhibit this week. The trail and its buildings, tanks, and pens are LEED certified and feature complex filtration systems that use Washington, DC, tap water. The zoo said it was able to save more than 85 percent in water consumption and energy use compared to standard designs.

Schneider Electric has earned Energy Star qualification for select models of its uninterruptible power supply Back-UPS and Smart-UPS systems, to be the first to achieve the energy efficiency rating under the federal program’s new UPS category. Qualified by an independent laboratory, the systems achieved operational efficiency in the top 25 percent of the market, the company said.

Grocery store chain Hy-Vee has opened its first LEED Gold-certified convenience store in Lawrence, Kan., a first for the city and the chain. Features of the store include on-site solar generation, a rooftop rain collection system, LED lighting and skylights, and irrigation system-free landscaping, writes Convenience Store News.

College preparatory school Campbell Hall in Hollywood, Calif., has earned LEED Gold certification for its new 111,000-sq.-ft. Arts & Education Center. Designed by architectural firm Gensler, the project earned the Westside Urban Forum Design award for its architecture and design, the school said.

The Clarendon Hospital in Manning, S.C., has earned LEED certification for its 47,000-sq.-ft. expansion project managed by green building consulting firm Trident Sustainability Group. The facility features a new energy plant with high efficiency chillers and boiler, ventilation units with energy recovery, and low flow plumbing fixtures that reduce water consumption by 40 percent, Trident said.

The Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa in Aruba has successfully completed its Green Globe re-certification for another year under the global certification program, the highest level of the Green Globe program. The resort completed a desktop audit certification assessment by an independent Green Globe accredited auditor, the resort said.

US operations of Three Jet Aviation have met the requirements for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards with programs to document and continually improve environmental, health and safety management systems. The locations that received the internationally recognized certifications are St. Louis; Teterboro, N.J.; and Boston/Bedford, Mass., Aviation International News said.

Glass processor and installer Glassolutions has certified its environmental management systems with ISO 14001 certification across its UK operations. The company said it has reduced energy consumption by more than five percent in the first quarter of 2011 compared with the same period in 2010, and implemented programs to reduce waste, raw materials and water usage at all its 25 UK sites.

Qatar Building Company has earned four certificates of quality management systems from Quality Austria for its civil contracting division. QBC was certified according to ISO 14001, ISO 9001, TS ISO 29001, and BS OHSAS 18001. The company earned all four certifications on the first audit and in record time, AMEinfo.com said.
