UK-based coffee brand Kenco is teaming up with upcycling specialist TerraCycle to create what it says is the UK’s first program that urges customers to recycle all brands of coffee packaging, reports Packaging Europe.
Coffee Recycling Brigade bins will be placed in public locations across the UK that the companies hope will serve as community hubs for the recycling of such waste as coffee bags, sachets and jar lids, the web site reports.
Coffee packaging waste is generally a mix of materials that many local councils don’t have the infrastructure for recycling, meaning it often ends up in landfill. But the materials in such packaging are actually recyclable, and TerraCycle can use its expertise in reusing post-consumer waste to turn the materials into new products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins, the web site reports.
To begin with, 100 slots across the UK will be available in the program. TerraCycle is asking interested parties to find a public space to house the collection box. TerraCycle says libraries, town halls, community centers and town center shops would be ideal locations, Packaging Europe says. Interested parties can sign up here.
In August, Tom’s of Maine announced a “brand-blind” partnership with TerraCycle to keep product packaging out of landfills. The Tom’s of Maine Natural Care Brigade accepts toothpaste tubes and caps, mouthwash bottles and caps, deodorant/antiperspirant containers, plastic soap wrappers and floss containers, regardless of brand. For each piece of packaging collected and sent in, the collector earns points that can be put toward charity gifts or converted to cash and paid to any school or nonprofit organization.
In April, packaging firm PI unveiled a jar for Kenco that uses 28 g (1 oz) less glass than its predecessor. The redesigned jar is now used on Kenco’s pure soluble line and incorporates redesigned elements such as corner chamfers and the “regal” closure from the previous jar.
