Standards & Compliance Briefing: Fruit South Africa, Restricted Substances, Council for Responsible Sport

Fruit South Africa has finalized a standard and audit process, the Ethical Trade Program, for the South African fruit industry. Fruit SA worked with the Global Social Compliance Program, which aims to harmonize ethical requirements and avoid duplication of audits while ensuring global standards. The growers’ association said it used the GSCP reference code as the basis, and aligned its own standard to South African law.

The American Apparel & Footwear Association has released its updated Restricted Substances List, covering apparel, footwear, travel goods, home textiles, and other fashion accessories. The AAFA RSL contains several new components, including the addition of Washington Children’s Safe Products Act requirements, and a link to the AAFA list of non-regulated substances contained in the Apparel Footwear International RSL Management (AFIRM) RSL, the association said.

The Council for Responsible Sport is calling for public comment during the revision of its ReSport certification standards for environmentally responsible sporting events. This version 4.0 update reflects input from 2011 and 2012 ParalympicsGB training camps, the 2012 US Track & Field Olympic Trials and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon – all of which piloted and applied for certification, the council said.

SCS Global Services has partnered with Alpha Hydraulic Engineering Consultants of Japan to conduct audits of sustainable seafood businesses under the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standards. SCS and AHEC will offer MSC certification for wild capture fisheries, ASC certification for fish farms, and chain-of-custody certification for processors, retailers and restaurants, SCS said.

The US General Services Administration has issued a request for information to gather input on new sustainable building technologies and practices in support of its Green Proving Ground program. The program is seeking information on technologies to test for the potential to improve economic and environmental performance in federal buildings, GSA said.

The BASF administration building in West Memphis, Ark., has achieved LEED Silver certification. During construction, 37 percent of the building materials used contain recycled content, and 59 percent were sourced within 500 miles. The company said that the site features BASF-enabled construction products that reduced energy consumption and are expected to increase building life expectancy.

The Panasonic headquarters for the Middle East and Africa in Dubai has earned its ISO 14001 certification. The Bureau of Assessment Services conducted the audit and awarded the accreditation, the Khaleej Times said.
