Wolseley to Cut Emissions From Energy 30%

Plumbing and heating products distributor Wolseley UK announced it will reduce carbon emissions from energy use by 30 percent in the next three years as part of its new environmental policy for sustainable development.

Wolseley UK, which operates in the US, Canada, UK, France, central Europe and Nordic region, will monitor and manage environmental performance at all levels of the business, particularly in energy use and waste, in order to meet its pledge to cut carbon emissions from energy by almost a third by 2015, reported Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Magazine.

The company will consider a range of initiatives, such as the installation of solar PV and LED lighting across its portfolio of businesses, which includes the Ferguson, Plumb Center, Stark and Tobler brands.

Carbon emissions from vehicle fuel contributed 64.4 percent and electricity contributed 25.7 percent of the company’s total CO2e in 2011, according to Wolseley.

Last year, Wolseley UK was awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for cutting the carbon footprint of all of its UK operations, including all subsidiaries. The company was certified for reducing carbon emissions by nearly 18 percent over a one-year period between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010.

Wolseley met those targets by focusing on waste, energy and transport. For example, the company introduced a backhauling process where clear plastic, cardboard and pallets are transported to larger sites for consolidation and recycling, which reduces waste sent to landfill. The company also rolled out the installation of smart meters across all of its branches to more accurately monitor and save energy.

The company achieved a qualitative assessment score of 76 percent, which reflects demonstrated effectiveness at responding to climate change through governance, carbon accounting and carbon management, the Carbon Trust said.
