Standards & Compliance Briefing: IEEE Smart Grid, Toshiba and ISO 14001, ISO 50001

Four new updates to IEEE’s wireless communications technologies 802 family of standards are expected to improve the implementation of advanced metering infrastructure and communications network reliability. The updates cover Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, Air Interface for Broadband Wireless Access Systems, and WirelessMAN-Advanced Air Interface for Broadband Wireless Access Systems. The association also has approved development of a new standard intended to enable the handover of groups of wireless data connections between different types of networks in a heterogeneous network.

Toshiba’s Semiconductor & Storage Products company has earned integrated ISO 14001 certification of its worldwide operating bases. ISO 14001 was previously secured by the company’s individual sites. With the new integrated certification, the company said it will promote an environmental management system across its operations and processes, including production, development and sales.

Brunel University in London has become one of 21 higher education providers to hold ISO 14001 accreditation for the entire institution. The certification comes after a two-year implementation strategy involving all schools, research centers and departments, including the medical center, the university said.

Container glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Oberland has been certified to the energy management standard ISO 50001. The certification is valid for operations in all the company’s locations in Germany – Bad Wurzach, Neuburg, Essen and Wirges. TÜV Rheinland conducted the audit, the company said.

Biodegradable flexible packaging maker Clondalkin Wentus has earned ISO 14001 and ISO 50001. The German location is one of 20 production facilities in Europe and North America under the company’s flexible packaging division. The certification follows a six-month partnership with environmental management consultants from the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences, Clondalkin said.

Pacnet has earned LEED Gold certification for its Hong Kong CloudSpace2 data center at the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, Hong Kong. The Tier III data center is the first in Hong Kong to achieve this level of certification. The cooling design achieves a power usage effectiveness of less than 1.5, helped by a highly-efficient chilled water system, the company said.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association headquarters in Tucson, Ariz., has earned LEED Silver certification. Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects designed the renovation and expansion of the existing structure and new office addition. The 16,000-sq.-ft. building includes a “desert roof,” the design firm said.
