Here’s a round up of green car news from the Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland:

Land Rover has unveiled seven new electric models of its Defender off-road vehicle. The standard diesel engine and gearbox have been replaced by a 70kW (94bhp), 330Nm electric motor twinned with a 300-volt, lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 27kWh, giving a range of more than 50 miles. In typical, low speed off-road use it can last for up to eight hours before recharging, Land Rover says.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is showing the e-Co-Motion zero emission transporter concept. The vehicle has a cargo capacity of 162 cubic feet and a maximum payload of more than 1,700 pounds, but has roughly the same footprint of VW’s Golf.

VW’s Golf BlueMotion is also on display at the show. With its 50-litre fuel tank and 88.3 mpg fuel consumption, the new Golf BlueMotion has a theoretical range of 970 miles. Assuming an average annual driving distance of around 9,300 miles, most drivers will only have to refuel 10 times a year, VW says.

Mitsubishi has unveiled the GR-HEV (pictured) diesel-electric hybrid concept and the CA-MiEV concept electric vehicle at the show. The GR-HEV’s 2.5L “clean diesel” engine helps reduce CO2 emissions during drive to levels of 149 g/km or below. The CA-MiEV is fitted with a 28kWh high capacity battery. The vehicle combines a reduction in body weight with improvements in aerodynamic performance, bringing about a cruising range of 300km.

Peugeot has launched its 2008 B-Segment urban crossover, which boasts carbon emissions of 98g/km for diesel and 99g/km for gasoline. The car’s fuel consumption stands at around 61.8 mpg.

Honda has announced its British-built CR-V will be the automaker’s latest to feature its “Earth Dreams Technology” 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine. The car features CO2 emissions of 119g/km. The SUV also features Honda’s ECON mode, which helps to minimize fuel consumption, and the Eco Assist system, which advises drivers on how their driving style is affecting fuel economy.

Nissan’s Note made its debut at the show. The car features “stop-start” as a standard feature across the range. Four engine and transmission options will be offered with emissions as low as 95g/km and fuel economy ranging from 4.7 l/100km, or around 50 mpg, for the 1.2 liter gasoline powered model, to 3.6 l/100km for the Note’s 1.5 liter turbo diesel.

Ford has debuted the European production version of its EcoSport SUVThe vehicle will be available with a range of efficient powertrains, including the 125 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost gasoline engine, a 110 PS 1.5-litre gasoline engine, and a 90 PS 1.5-litre diesel engine expected to deliver what Ford calls class-leading fuel efficiency.
