KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is to operate weekly biofuel-powered intercontinental flights in partnership with Schiphol Group, Delta Air Lines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

KLM will run the flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Amsterdam’s Schiphol using a blend of sustainable biofuel derived from used cooking oil. Flight KL642 is operated by a Boeing 777-200 every Thursday.

The biofuel is supplied by SkyNRG, a company which KLM founded in 2009 together with Argos and Spring Associates. SkyNRG currently supplies more than fifteen carriers worldwide. For the JFK to Schiphol route, SkyNRG’s longstanding US partner EPIC Aviation LLC is distributing the fuel.

In June 2011, KLM announced plans to start using biokerosene derived from cooking oil for more than 200 flights on its Paris-Amsterdam route. A year later the airline completed its longest biofuel flight to that date, from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro. KLM describes the flights to New York as “the next step.”

Last year KLM launched the first biofuel service for contracted corporate accounts. The initiative allows corporate clients to fly on biofuel for a portion of their total flight volume, or on specific routes. The number of partners in the program has more than doubled to fifteen. Since this year it includes the City of Amsterdam, Loyens & Loeff, PGGM, FMO, Delta Air Lines, Siemens, TomTom and CBRE Global Investors. They follow initial customers such as Ahold, Accenture, DSM, Heineken, Nike, Philips and Schiphol Group, which have been supporting KLM’s Biofuel program since June of 2012.

United Airlines and Alaska Airlines launched commercial flights powered by biofuel in November 2011. The fuel was supplied by SkyNRG and made by Dynamic Fuels, a $170 million joint venture between Tyson Foods Inc. and Syntroleum Corp.
