Standards & Compliance Briefing: Bonsucro, E-Waste Auditing, Water Reuse

Amyris has joined Bonsucro, the world’s leading sugarcane sustainability standard. Amyris is the first advanced biofuels and chemicals company to join Bonsucro, which will lead to the certification of its renewable products. The Bonsucro Production Standard is used to assure buyers and suppliers that sugarcane-derived products meet sustainability indicators such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption, Amyris said.

The UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has launched the Publicly Available Specification 141 standard to create a transparent auditing process for companies reusing e-waste, and set out the requirements to ensure that UEEE and WEEE are fit for reuse. Goods from companies with PAS 141 certification will carry labels, enabling the public to identify high quality reused products, which are electrically safe to use and functionally fit for purpose, the Center for Recycling and Reuse writes.

Emerson Network Power’s 11 models of the Liebert GXT3 uninterruptible power supply have earned the EPA Energy Star qualification. To meet the certification, a UPS-specific certification body tested the Liebert GXT3 for average power, efficiency and efficiency variation for determination of steady-state. The systems are for cabinets that use 2U to 6U of rack space, Datacenter Dynamics said.

The Standardization Administration of China, the Chinese member body to the ISO, in conjunction with the Standards Institution of Israel and the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee, has submitted a proposal for a new field of technical activity on water reuse. The proposal covers the reuse of treated wastewater in urban areas, and, if approved, will be merged with ISO Project Committee (PC) 253, Treated wastewater reuse for irrigation. ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by April 19, the standards institute said.

Solo Cup Europe has become one the first companies in its sector to achieve ISO 50001 certification for energy management, following an external audit of processes and data management. The company also holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, Packaging Europe said.

Monroe Community College’s Gleason Hall for Science and Technology has received LEED Gold certification. The hall, which was designed by Rochester, NY, firm SWBR Architects, features a sky-lit student collaboration space and second-floor deck constructed from sections of an old lecture hall. Gleason Hall is MCC’s third SWBR-designed structure to receive a LEED certification, the Brighton Pittsford Post said.

The Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program issued a new resource that provides guidance for federal agencies developing large-scale renewable energy projects. The Large-Scale Renewable Energy Guide: Developing Renewable Energy Projects Larger than 10 MWs at Federal Facilities provides a framework including active project management strategies, common terms, and principles that reduce project uncertainties between the federal government, private developers, and financiers, the energy department said.
