Automotive brands account for four of the top five spots in this year’s ranking with innovation driving their success, according to the report, which evaluates and ranks companies on their environmental performance as well as the public’s perception of their green credentials.
After first-placed Toyota, Ford came in second, Honda third and Nissan fifth. Volkswagen ranked seventh. Although most automotive brands have invested in meeting sustainability goals and complying with regulations, those brands that have invested in creating innovative products as evidence of their commitment to sustainability — for example the Toyota Prius, Ford EcoBoost or Nissan LEAF — are receiving more recognition from consumers, Interbrand says.
Toyota continues to dominate the hybrid vehicle market, selling more than 2.9 million Prius models worldwide in 2012. Toyota is also building a low-carbon society called Toyota Ecoful Town in Toyota City, Japan. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to using reusable metal containers for shipping and distribution, Toyota is a leading example of what can result — both in terms of performance and perception — when a company makes sustainability an integral part of its overarching business strategy, Interbrand says.
Nissan is the top riser in this year’s report moving up 16 places from last year. In February, the company announced that 50,000 LEAFs had been produced worldwide, making the LEAF the most widely sold electric passenger car of all time.
At No. 4, Panasonic is the lone non-auto brand in the top five and also the top-ranked electronics manufacturer. The company earned its position as the tech category leader by continuing to offer innovative, eco and smart solutions to its global consumer base, Interbrand says. Despite automakers accounting for most of the top spots, technology brands dominate the overall report, accounting for 12 spots in the ranking, Interbrand says.
The top five in the 2012 report comprised, in this order: Toyota, Johnson & Johnson, Honda, Volkswagon and Hewlett-Packard.
