Standards & Compliance Briefing: Google, GM LEED; e-Stewards, Green Seal

Historic Bakery Square (pictured), a former Pittsburgh Nabisco factory whose largest tenant is Google, has earned Platinum certification under the LEED for Core and Shell Rating System. PPG Industries said the certification was due in part to the building’s use of Solarban 60 solar control, low-emissivity glass, which PPG manufactures.

The 37,000 sq ft administration building at General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground has become the company’s first LEED-certified brownfield site. The project involved a near-complete demolition of the existing facility. GM recycled more than 200 tons of construction material, including 128 tons of steel and 49 tons of concrete, and donated about 11 tons of carpet, ceiling tile, TVs, VCRs and other goods to Habitat for Humanity.

Merritt Construction Services’s build-out for EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, at 225 Schilling Circle in Hunt Valley, Md., has been awarded LEED Gold certification for Commercial Interiors. The headquarters occupies two floors of Schilling Green II, a LEED Platinum office building completed by Merritt last year.

The US Army’s air traffic control tower at Pope Field in North Carolina has earned LEED certification. The project recycled more than 90 percent of the high-tech electronics from the old tower, and employs motion-sensor light controls, electric car charging and post-consumer construction materials.

Arrow Electronics will be the first global e-Stewards recycler to take the program to all its facilities on multiple continents, standard administrator Basel Action Network announced. Under a three-year agreement, BAN will certify nine Arrow processing facilities in the United States, six in Europe and one in Brazil.

The Orbio Multi-Surface Cleaner, generated on-site by the Orbio 5000-Sc cleaner using water, salt and electricity, has received certification under Green Seal GS-37, the standard for industrial and institutional cleaning products. Consultant Ecoform conducted the life cycle assessment.

Souriau has industrialized RoHS-compliant zinc nickel plating for most of the company’s MilAero interconnectors, which includes the D38999, Series I, II and III, MIL-C-26482 Series I, VG96918, micro38999, caps and backshell. The company says the plating is non-reflective, can be used at high temperatures (+175°C) and with fluids such as de-icing, and is universally compatible with other already-installed finishes, such as passivated stainless steel, composite nickel, or alodine.
