Horiba Scientific has launched an X-ray fluorescence analyzer for businesses needing to screen samples containing hazardous elements. These include lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury, bromine for Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), end-of-life compliance, and chlorine for halogen-free arsenic and antimony applications, the company says.
The Mesa-50 Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer, successor to the company’s XGT-WR series, includes three analysis diameters that Horiba Scientific says are suitable for every sample, from thin cables and electronic parts to bulk samples.
The company says the product also supports ecological procurement because it contributes to European Union RoHS and end-of-life-vehicles compliance testing, as well as regulatory work for other countries.
Mesa-50 combines a silicon drift detector (SDD) and digital pulse processor (DPP). It was built around what Horiba Scientific calls “5S Technology,” which includes:
- Speed: The company says its SDD reduces measurement times and provides increased sensitivity. This ensures true high throughput analysis.
- Small Size: The lightweight Mesa-50 is portable, with a small footprint of less than 1 cubic foot, and a weight of approximately 26 lbs. Its battery life is six hours; it can also be outlet powered.
- Simple Operation: The product can be connected to a PC via USB. With its liquid nitrogen-free operation, and no need for vacuum pumps, it provides an intuitive measurement process for all types of materials, the company says.
- Smart Interface: The MESA-50 offers multi-language user interface, including English, Japanese and Chinese, and an Excel data management tool for report generation.
- Safe: The company says there is no worry about X-ray leakage. There are several interlock devices, and Mesa-50 is shielded by a metal cover. In addition, every unit is inspected separately to ensure Horiba Scientific’s standard of 1ìSv/h.
Mesa-50 is currently available with four filters and three spot sizes. A unique filter allows five hazardous elements to be detected simultaneously, the company says.
