A green fee on new MetroCards has brought in almost $11 million for New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority over four months, and between March and May, increased re-use of the plastic travel cards from 61 to 87 percent, the New York Daily News reports.
MTA began charging a one-dollar fee for every new subway card purchased after March 3, 2013. Subway users could avoid the fee by refilling their travel card. MTA said it produces almost 160 million MetroCards each year at an annual cost of nearly $10 million.
MTA calculates that the new fee has generated $10,841,000 since March with gross revenues expected to total nearly $24 million by the year’s end. In 2014, fees for new card should reach $28 million and contribute a $3.8 million savings in production costs, the Daily News said.
MTA expects to print 60 million fewer MetroCards next year – cards that would stretch more than 3,000 miles if placed end to end, the Daily News said.
Since 2007 the MTA has worked to develop sustainability-related initiatives with the aim to expand the “greening power of transit” to more riders and communities, while managing and reducing the MTA’s per-rider energy consumption and environmental footprint, according to the MTA website.
