Environmental Executive Moves: Kennecott, US Navy, City of Los Angeles, Flare

Dennis McGinnHere’s the latest news on hirings, promotions and departures among environmental leaders.

Kennecott Utah Copper: The mining, smelting and refining company’s parent company, Rio Tinto, says Kennecott president and CEO Kelly Sanders will step down Sept. 1 following an April landslide that damaged an ore pit west of Salt Lake City, the Associated Press reports. Sanders will take another, yet-to-be-determined position with Rio Tinto. Kennecott’s chief operating officer Stephane Leblanc will serve as both COO and CEO, while Lynn Cardey-Yates will step down as vice president of sustainable development.

US Navy: The US Senate unanimously confirmed Vice Admiral Dennis McGinn (pictured) to be assistant secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, Greentech Media reports. McGinn is the former American Council On Renewable Energy’s president and CEO; Michael Brower will act as interim CEO until the ACORE board hires a new CEO.

City of Los Angeles: Matt Petersen has been named the city’s first-ever chief sustainability officer, Los Angeles Daily News reports. Petersen is stepping down as CEO and president of Global Green, an environmental group, to take the job.

Flare Industries: The vapor recovery, combustion and pollution-control technologies company has appointed Mark Zyskowski as senior vice president of global sales and marketing, a new position at the company. Zyskowski most recently was vice president of global sales for Honeywell Process Solutions.

Calgon Carbon: The activated carbon and ultraviolet technology services company has appointed John J. Paro to its board of directors. Paro serves as chairman, president and CEO of the HallStar Company, a specialty chemical company.

Tetra Tech: The environmental engineering and technical services company’s board of directors has elected Kirsten M. Volpi to serve as a director and a member of the audit committee. Volpi serves at the Colorado School of Mines as executive vice president for finance and administration, chief financial officer and treasurer.
