Green Fleet Roundup: Tesla, MetLife, Freightliner, LG Chem

Tesla Model S (2)Tesla Motors will work on penetrating China’s auto market with its all-electric Model S sedan, strengthened by its success in the US and in Europe, reports the San Jose Mercury News. It will open its first showroom in Beijing.

MetLife, a partner of the Department of Energy’s Workplace Charging Challenge, has installed 32 electric car charging stations at 14 US facilities across 10 states. Employees can use the chargers to power up their plug-in electric vehicles during the workday.

Freightliner Trucks announced that its Cascadia natural gas-powered tractors will be available with a 48-inch sleeper cab. The Cascadia will be available with factory-installed compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas tanks.

LG Chem, a Korean battery maker, has now begun making lithium-ion batteries for the Chevy Volt at a Holland, Mich., plant. LG will deliver its initial shipments to General Motors in September or October this year, AutoBlog reports. The plant was supposed to manufacture the battery packs last year, but because the Volt had sluggish sales, LG shipped the batteries direct from Korea and idled the plant.
