Michigan Chamber Of Commerce Counters Anti-Fracking Group

LetsBanFrackingThe Michigan Chamber of Commerce launched an advertising campaign, called “Protect Michigan’s Energy Future” to counter a ballot initiative that aims to ban fracking in the state. The Chamber’s ad campaign includes billboards, posted across the state, as well as a website.

The Michigan Chamber Board of Directors recently voted unanimously to support responsible oil and gas exploration in Michigan and to oppose any attempt to ban the use of hydraulic fracturing. The Chamber says its ad campaign is necessary to counter a “false and misleading petition drive now underway by environmental activists.”

  1. I am rural landowner in Ottawa County, Michingan and I’m voting in support of the ban on fracking. I have signed the petition. Why? Because the average fracking well uses 2 million gallons of fresh water mixed with man-made ceramics and toxic chemicals, uses an average of 20,000 gallons of toxic liquids at each well (read the article in National Geographic if you don’t believe me), and tens of thousands of gallons of contaminated waste water must be moved from the each well site to a waste disposal injection well. This means hundreds of tanker trucks moving through rural farm communities loaded with toxic, carcinogenic solution. Is this safe? Search MLIVE and you will find an article about a tanker spill a couple weeks ago in Kalkaska County, Michigan, go ahead and read about the toxic chemical spilled on the highway. I am voting in support of the ban because of the risk of chemical contamination to my community, the risk of cancer to my family, and the ever increasing threat of climate change that is perpetuated by the oil and gas industry. I have solar panels on my property, I bought them off ebay for $180 bucks each. Solar and Wind power are safe alternatives to the oil and gas industry that spreads cancer and endangers all life on this planet by exacerbating climate change. The 20th Century was the century of oil. The 20th century is long over. The 21st Century belongs to those who move beyond oil and gas. Fracking must be banned! Vote yes on the ban in Michigan!
