Standards & Compliance Briefing: Plumbing/Heating Pilot, Substances of Very High Concern

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada have launched pilot projects to facilitate the development of joint Canada-US standards to serve public health and safety objectives in the plumbing/heating and electrotechnical sectors. The pilots will focus on emerging product areas where neither standards nor regulations currently exist, and where standards development would benefit the greatest number of users.

All six chemicals added to the European Chemicals Agency’s candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern on June 20 are already included in the testing criteria for the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which covers textile raw materials and end products, OEKO-TEX said. The substances are cadmium; cadmium oxide; ammonium pentadecafluorooctanoate; pentadecafluorooctanoic acid; dipentyl phthalate; and branched and linear, ethoxylated 4-nonylphenol.

Cummins’ Columbus Engine Plant has become the company’s first facility to earn ISO 50001 energy management system certification. CEP’s energy improvements include replacing 4,000 metal halide light fixtures with high efficiency fluorescent fixtures, substituting efficient direct-fired air handling units for steam heat, improving building insulation and increasing air compressor efficiency, the company says.

Palm Utilities, a Dubai World company, has been awarded renewal of its ISO 14001 environmental management and OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety certifications. Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance conducted the audit, covering the company’s entire operations and processes, in May.

Shorenstein Company has received LEED Gold, Core and Shell certification for 188 Spear Street, a newly redeveloped 216,000 sq ft office building in San Francisco. Sustainability features include direct electrical sub-metering for tenant spaces, and a supply and return air fan system with an array of controllable fans to optimize ventilation and HVAC energy use.

Wyndham Worldwide has received LEED Silver certification for Existing Buildings – Operations and Maintenance, for its headquarters in Parsippany, N.J. The building already has LEED Silver for Corporate Interiors. The facility diverts all landscape waste from landfills, uses 85 percent sustainable cleaning products, and has a sustainable purchasing policy covering items such as furniture and electronic goods.
