Standards & Compliance: Greenroads, SITES, e-Stewards Enterprise, Greener Fields Together

The Monterey Road Reconstruction Project in San Jose, Calif., has become the first project in the state to achieve Greenroads certification, the Greenroads Foundation said. The 2.1-mile project earned a bronze rating for its design and construction sustainability efforts. The rating system is a collection of sustainable roadway design and construction best practices related to water, environment, access, community impact, construction practices, and materials.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative has certified eight new projects under its rating system for sustainable design, construction and maintenance of built landscapes. These projects, as part of a group of 150 projects participating in an extensive, two-year pilot program, have applied the 2009 SITES guidelines and met the requirements for pilot certification. The newly certified projects are:

  • Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley, Texas;
  • Harris County WCID 132’s Water Conservation Center in Spring, Texas;
  • American University School for International Service in Washington, D.C.;
  • Bat Cave Draw and Visitor’s Center at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, N.M.;
  • Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center at Mesa Verde National Park, Colo.;
  • George “Doc” Cavalliere Park in Scottsdale, Az.;
  • the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Research Support Facility in Golden, Colo.; and
  • Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park in Beacon, N.Y.

Lockheed Martin has earned e-Stewards Enterprise designation for responsible electronic waste management from the Basel Action Network. Certified companies pledge to prevent hazardous materials in improperly managed end-of-life electronics from having adverse impacts on people and the environment, BAN said.

Ted’s Montana Grill has become the first national restaurant chain to partner with Greener Fields Together, the sustainability and local produce program. Greener Fields Together, created by PRO*ACT, works with foodservice and retail operators to achieve their sustainability goals, the organization said.

The Rhode Island-based Cooley Group has received ISO 14001 certification. The geomembrane manufacturer in Pawtucket, R.I., qualified for the standard for its development of sustainable products, reduction and recycling waste, and efficient use of its energy resources. Cooley also holds ISO 9001 certifications, according to Geosynthetics Magazine.

Randolph Community College’s Continuing Education and Industrial Center in Asheboro, N.C., has received LEED Gold certification. It is the first building in Randolph County to become LEED certified. Features of the renovated warehouse project include a3,500-gallon rain harvesting tank, use of regionally manufactured building materials, and use low emitting materials, the college said.

The Woodlands Township in Texas has earns gold LEED certification for the renovation of its Town Hall. Palermo Barr Commercial Real Estate Advisors managed the two-year project, with Kirksey Architecture providing consulting on the project, Woodlands News said.
