Contract Wins: Covanta, MHI, Veolia, URS, Maxwell Technologies

Covanta Marion, a subsidiary of Covanta Energy Corporation, and Marion County, Ore., have announced an agreement that extends sustainable waste disposal services for the county at the Covanta waste-to-energy facility (pictured), located in the Marion County. The new agreement, which is for up to five years, begins in September 2014 after the expiration of an existing 30-year agreement.

Maxwell Technologies is supplying ultracapacitors to Caterpillar for a high-efficiency energy management system that supports Cat’s fuel-saving hydra-electric technology in the industry’s largest-ever hydraulic mining shovel, the new Cat 6120B H FS. The 1,400-ton shovel’s energy management system incorporates 98 of Maxwell’s 125-volt ultracapacitor modules to efficiently absorb energy during brief shovel movements and rapidly deliver stored electrical energy on demand to supplement the main power system.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has been awarded an order to supply six J-Series gas turbines for a 2,600 MW natural gas-fired combined cycle power generation plant being built by Taiwan Power Company. The company’s 60 hertz M501J gas turbine has achieved the world’s highest turbine inlet temperature of 1,600 degrees Celsius, and is currently the most advanced, high-efficiency gas turbine available, MHI says.

Veolia Water Chile and Vapor Procesos, a Chilean copper recovery firm, have secured a contract with Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, to recover copper from mine tailings. Under the contract, VWP — a joint venture between the two contractors — will design, build and begin operation of a mining effluent processing facility in 2013 at El Teniente mine, the world’s largest underground copper mine, located around 75 miles south of Santiago de Chile.

URS Corporation will be the front-end engineering and design contractor for small-scale bio-refineries manufacturer Cool Planet’s first commercial facility. URS will work to design the wood waste to cellulosic gasoline plant, which will be located in Alexandria, La.

Induction-based electric propulsion motor technology from GE Power Conversion business will be used to power four new LNG carriers that Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries will build for Maran Gas Maritime, the gas shipping unit of the Angelicoussis Shipping Group. Contracts for the propulsion systems were signed in late May. Hyundai Heavy Industries will deliver the vessels over a 15-month period beginning in July 2015.

German ozone water treatment specialist Hydro-Elektrik has selected Primozone to provide the ozone generator for a new drinking water treatment plant in the municipality of Bamble, Norway. The plant aims to improve standards of hygiene and remove color from the drinking water.
