Standards & Compliance: Planet Mark, LEED, ISO 14001

Environmental education center The Eden Project and consulting group Planet First have launched The Planet Mark, a certification denoting businesses that have committed to improve their environmental, social and economic performance on an annual basis. About 80 businesses have already been certified to the standard, which offers access to an online carbon footprint and social performance reporting system, along with detailed improvement plans. Ten percent of fees go to the Eden Trust for sustainability education projects.

KPMG’s Denver office has received LEED Commercial Interior certification. Ninety percent of new technology equipment and appliances used in construction are Energy Star rated, and 75 percent of office light fixtures are controlled by occupancy sensors. The building has a two-year renewable energy contract that provides 50 percent of its electricity, and it provides employees with disposal for batteries and old electronics.

Centric Business Systems‘ headquarters, in Merritt Properties’ business park in Owings Mills, Md., has received LEED Gold certification. The 39,000-square-foot building includes corporate offices, a product showroom and warehouse space. The project has a 24kW rooftop photovoltaic array, and diverted 83 percent of construction waste from landfills.

Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services’ head office in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong has been certified as LEED Gold. Features include 35 percent reduced lighting power density when compared to ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007; and a 30 percent reduction in water use compared to the baseline calculated for the tenant spaces.

Binghamton University‘s engineering and science building has achieved LEED Platinum certification. The building, which houses offices and laboratories for the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, includes a geothermal system and photovoltaic panels on both the roof and south-facing wall, PressConnects reports.

Aspetar, an orthopedic and sports medicine hospital in Qatar, has renewed its ISO 14001 environmental management system certification. SGS carried out the audit. Aspetar says it has significantly reduced the consumption of paper, waste, water and electric power throughout hospital grounds.
