Multi-pack handles

Sustainable Packaging Roundup: Roberts PolyPro, Cascadian Farm, CKF, Subway

RoMulti-pack handlesberts PolyPro, which makes packaging products for consumer goods and beverages, has developed a more sustainable HDPE handle for the two-pack gallon jugs used for milk and other beverages. The company says the cost for the handles is lower by 26 percent compared to the last-generation Roberts PolyPro two-pack handles, materials have been reduced by 28 percent and enable 22 percent greater pallet utilization that helps drive down transportation costs and impacts.

The company says its extruded handles and multi-pack carriers consume on average 5 percent to 35 percent less resin compared to injection molded products. Its handles are made from extruded HDPE resin and, when used with either PET or HDPE bottles, the entire package — bottles and handle — is 100 percent recyclable.

Cascadian Farm, which makes organic cereals, granolas, fruit and vegetable products, has introduced a cereal box liner made from renewable plant sources. Its Cinnamon Crunch cereal is now packaged in an inner bag made from up to 57 percent certified plant-based material. The company says it worked with sustainable packaging experts to develop the liner.

CKF, a Canadian food packaging company, has acquired Vancouver-based EarthCycle Packaging. EarthCycle is a Dupont award winner for its sustainable packaging products made out of palm fiber, which used to be considered an agricultural waste product. CKF makes the Royal Chinet brand of disposable plates and other food trays and containers.

Subway has pledged to cut food and packaging waste in the UK and Ireland where customers that buy its £2 ($3.19) breakfast receive hot drinks in a double-wall cup that replaces the existing triple-wall cup. The double-wall sustainable cup is estimated to save 30 metric tons of pulp per year across Europe and takes approximately 25 percent less energy to produce, Subway says.
