Contract Wins: OriginOil, ISI, Solidia Technologies, Cool Planet, Locus

Cool PlanetOriginOil, developer of Electro Water Separation (EWS), a high-speed, chemical-free process to clean up large quantities of water, has signed its first pay-per-barrel agreement with Industrial Systems, Inc. (ISI) for a water treatment system integrating OriginOil’s process as the first stage of treatment. ISI will operate the EWS Model P160, which can process up to 160 liters (65 gallons) per minute, as part of its overall frac flowback water cleanup service, and pay OriginOil a fee for each barrel processed.

Building materials company Lafarge has signed a partnership agreement with the cement and concrete technology company Solidia Technologies to industrialize a technology that could reduce the environmental footprint of pre-cast concrete by up to 70 percent, the companies say. The technology allows lower CO2 emissions in the cement production process and involves the capture of CO2 in precast concrete manufacturing.

Process and Water Company has been selected to provide an industrial wastewater recycle and reuse system to TE Connectivity, formerly Tyco Electronics. The new system, which was successfully piloted at a TE facility in Norwood, Mass., will enable the company to recycle and reuse up to 80 percent of the water currently used in the facility’s industrial processes, lowering water usage and energy costs as well as sewer discharge fees.

Cool Planet Energy Systems, a developer of small-scale bio refineries for the conversion of non-food biomass into biofuels and soil enhancing biochar, and Acritaz Greentech, a group of companies that bring biomass processing and bio-technology to plantations, have signed an agreement to explore the building of multiple commercial facilities in Malaysia. The plan is to begin construction on the first plant in 2014. Acritaz will work with Cool Planet to use biomass raw materials local to the region that include palm plantation waste products such as empty fruit bunches, wood, and bark waste to make renewable, cellulosic fuels for the Asian market.

Los Alamos National Laboratory has extended its contract with web-based environmental software company Locus Technologies for four more years. LANL will continue to use Locus’ Environmental Information Management software to address legacy site contamination and to take a better aggregate view of its operations for environmental stewardship.

URS Corporation has been awarded a contract by Indiana Environmental Partners to engineer and implement SBS Injection technology for Indianapolis Power & Light Company’s Petersburg Generating Station. URS’ proprietary technology for sulfur trioxide (SO3) control will be installed on all four coal-fired boilers at Petersburg totaling more than 1,800 MW of generating capacity and will commence operation in late 2014. The Petersburg system will inject sorbent and remove SO3 prior to the selective catalytic reduction system and/or air preheater to enhance plant operational performance and the capture and removal of mercury, as well as meet stringent sulfuric acid emission limits.
