compostivalZeeks Pizza in the metro Seattle, WA, area, is partnering with Seattle Public Utilities, King County Solid Waste Division, and Cedar Grove — a company that recycles organic waste and turns it into products like compost, potting soil, topsoil and mulch — for Compostival, a celebration intended to reward Seattle and King County residents for their help in diverting 350,000 tons of food, food-soiled paper products, and yard waste from landfills each year.

Zeeks Pizza, a chain headquartered in Seattle, will offer scratch-and-win tickets to customers for a chance to win prizes including free pizza and pro-football game tickets, writes Patch.com. Scratch-and-win cards also include a coupon for a free bag of Cedar Grove compost with the purchase of two bags of compost.

Cedar Grove marketing director John Inge points out that the Seattle metro area has one of the fastest growing commercial organics programs in the US, with 2,200 businesses participating in food waste collection programs. The program is intended to celebrate and shine a spotlight on these successful recycling efforts.

Director of the King County Solid Waste Division Pat McLaughlin says that about a third of what is sent to landfill every year is food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste. The average household generates nearly 50 pounds of these items every month.
