Standards & Compliance Briefing: ISO 14001 and RoHS List Revisions, Wireless Automation

The ISO 14001 Working Group (TC 207/SC1 WG5) has released Committee Draft 2, the latest step in revising the environmental management standard. The draft now enters a three-month balloting period, according to LRQA deputy technical director Steve Williams, a member of the working group. WG5’s joint secretary, Mike Henigan, said the draft is being issued to ISO national member bodies only.

The European Commission’s third and final stakeholder meeting on the revision of the RoHS hazardous substance list was a contentious affair, with significant disagreement on proposed methodology for substance review, the draft list of chemicals prioritized for assessment, and on a draft assessment of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), according to Fern Abrams of electronics industry body IPC, writing for PCB Design 007. Because of the lack of consensus, the commission plans to set up a working group to refine the methodology, Abrams said.

ISA-100.11a-2011, “Wireless Systems for Industrial Automation: Process Control and Related Applications,” has received approval from all 21 participating National Committees of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The International Society of Automation expects the standard to be issued in early 2014 for a final IEC approval stage in which no technical comments may be submitted. The standard will carry the designation IEC 62734 upon publication.

SAI Global Assurance Services is now an accredited certification body for the ISO 50001 energy management standard, one of only eight certification bodies in the world accredited for ISO 50001 by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

Bureau Veritas Certification has awarded renal care provider Diaverum with ISO 14001 environmental management and ISO 9001 quality management certification for seven countries. Diaverum says its operations in two more countries will join next year. The company operates in a total of 19 countries.

The UK’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has published guidance for businesses, including electronics manufacturers, retailers and waste management firms, on upcoming changes to the WEEE system, Lets Recycle reports.
