Contract Wins: WCS, Waste Management, Alter NRG, BioteQ, Johnson Controls

Waste ManagementThe Department of Energy has awarded a task order in support of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Legacy Waste Project to Waste Control Specialists of Andrews, Texas. Under the $2,225,140 contract, WCS will dispose of 355 cubic yards of class C mixed low-level waste generated at Los Alamos. The waste is from clean-up and remediation activities.

Waste Management’s energy services division will provide coal combustion product marketing and onsite landfill management services to American Electric Power at three of its power plants in Texas and Oklahoma. Under the contract, Waste Management’s FlyAshDirect division will market fly ash, a substance generated during the combustion of coal, for reuse.

Air Products has contracted Alter NRG, the owner of Westinghouse Plasma, to deliver a Westinghouse plasma gasifier for the Air Products’ Tees Valley 2 project. This follow-up project is on the same site as Tees Valley 1, currently under construction by Air Products at its Tees Valley Renewable Energy Facility, which also uses the Westinghouse plasma technology.

Wastewater treatment company BioteQ Environmental Technologies has secured a three-year contract extension for water treatment services at the Glencore Raglan Mine site. BioteQ designed and operates two nickel removal plants applying its proprietary technologies — a ChemSulphide plant owned by BioteQ and a Met-IX plant owned by Glencore — to treat mining effluent for environmental compliance. In addition, BioteQ also provides operating services to Glencore for an adjacent lime treatment facility. BioteQ has been providing operating services at the Raglan site for the past 10 years.

Green EnviroTech Holdings and UK company Black Lion Oil Ventures will build a plant in the UK utilizing the GETH oil conversion technology for mixed plastics and waste tires. If BLOV could secure 25 percent of plastic waste generated in the UK and 25 percent of waste tires, there would be constant sufficient raw material to support 218 GETH systems, the company says.

Johnson Controls has acquired a 90 percent ownership of Colombian battery supplier MAC. Johnson Controls and MAC launched a joint venture in June 2011 to produce and sell lead-acid batteries in the Central and South American regions.

CH2M Hill Halcrow, a consulting, design, construction and operations firm, has been awarded the contract to carry out the strategic environmental assessment and associated environmental work for the dualling of the A96 between Inverness and Aberdeen, Scotland. The dualling of the A96 is central to Scotland’s sustainable economic growth objectives and was outlined in the Scottish Government’s 2011 Infrastructure Investment Plan, the company says.
