President Obama will nominate BP chief scientist Ellen D. Williams to lead the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), within the Department of Energy.
President Obama will nominate the acting director at the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management, Neil Kornze, to lead the bureau permanently. Obama also formally announced that he would nominate Tommy Beaudreau as Interior’s assistant secretary for policy, management and budget. The president plans to nominate Latham & Watkins partner Janice Schneider to replace Beaudreau as Interior Department assistant secretary for land and minerals management, but Beaudreau would keep his second post as director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the Hill reports.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has published its Sixth National Report for the Convention on Nuclear Safety, describing the US government’s actions under the convention to achieve a high level of safety for its nuclear power plants. Challenges addressed by the report include buried piping degradation, ground water protection and cyber security threats.
