Ecolab Expands Industrial Water Treatment Business

Ecolab has completed its acquisition of AkzoNobel’s Purate business.

Purate provides patented, proprietary chlorine dioxide (ClO2) chemistry for use in an array of water treatment applications and expands the range of water treatment solutions provided by Nalco, an Ecolab company. The Purate business made $23 million in revenue in 2012.

The Purate acquisition extends Nalco’s current chlorine dioxide offerings and allows the company to meet the larger volumes of chlorine dioxide required for industrial cooling towers, pulp and paper, and drinking water applications as well as a variety of other biocide applications, Ecolab says.

US demand for water treatment chemicals will rise 3.2 percent per year to reach $6.7 billion in 2017, an increase driven by growth in the oil, gas and mining industries and a rebound in manufacturing production, according to a study published in October by the Freedonia Group.
