Green Fleet Roundup: Supervalu, Ikea, Volvo, Toyota

volvoGrocery chain Supervalu has purchased 35 Class 8 Volvo trucks that operate on compressed natural gas. To power the new trucks, Trillium CNG built and will operate a fast-fill CNG station at Supervau’s Mechanicsville, Va., distribution center. The conversion to natural gas will reduce the fleet’s annual oil consumption by more than 1 million gallons and result in 1,300 fewer tons of greenhouse gas emissions, the company says.

Ballard Power Systems has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with European bus manufacturer Van Hool in support of the manufacture and further deployment of fuel cell buses. By February 2014 the companies plan to jointly respond to last week’s call for proposals under the EU Hydrogen Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking and also jointly respond to future calls for proposals under the Horizon 2020 program.

Ascent Solar Technologies‘ flexible and lightweight CIGS solar modules are being used in Volvo’s Pure Tension Pavilion project. It assembles in less than one hour.
