Standards & Compliance Briefing: Green Globes, SCS and LEED, Recycled Asphalt

ECD Energy and Environment Canada has released a new version of Green Globes for New Construction Canada, based largely on a Canadian adaptation of ANSI/GBI 01-2010 – Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings. Green Globes calls this the most significant upgrade to the Canadian standard since its launch in 2004.

SCS Global Services announced that its SCS Indoor Advantage, Indoor Advantage Gold and FloorScore certifications meet requirements under the new LEED v4 Environmental Quality credit for low-emitting materials. The company also announced that, in addition to furniture and building products, SCS Indoor Advantage Gold certification can now be earned for carpeting.

A proposed ASTM International standard, ASTM WK40799, Practice for Recovery of Asphalt from Solution Using Toluene and the Rotary Evaporator, would govern testing of asphalt used in common pavements. The proposed standard will allow the recovery of bitumen in reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled asphalt shingles, ASTM says.

ASTM has approved ASTM F2550-13, Standard Practice for Locating Leaks in Sewer Pipes By Measuring the Variation of Electric Current Flow Through the Pipe Walls. According to leak detection company Electro Scan, the original ASTM standard has become a key factor for determining the cost-effective design, testing, and certification of pipe repairs, renewal, and new construction.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science headquarters in Washington, D.C., has been recertified to LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Platinum, upgrading from Gold. Improvements include a more energy-efficient cooling system and use of real-time energy management software. AAAS now offsets 100 percent of energy consumption through RECs and carbon offsets.

Vishay Intertechnology’s HiRel Systems Division has earned ISO 14001 certification at its Marshall, Minn., plant, following an audit by UL DQS. The plant makes custom magnetics – including inductors, transformers, and telemetry coils – for implantable medical devices.

Smart grid company Survalent Technology says its Advanced Automation Management System Software is now certified to IEC 61850, a standard for communication in substation automation, after testing by KEMA Nederland.
