Standards & Compliance Briefing: Thermal Comfort, Hyundai, Nanoparticles

ASHRAE has published ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-2013, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, which combines the 2010 standard and 18 published addenda into a consolidated standard. The core of the standard in Sections 4 and 5 specifies methods to determine comfortable conditions (temperature, humidity, air speed and radiant effects). The standard now includes a predictive model for people’s “clothing behavior,” based on extensive field research.

Hyundai Heavy Industries has received ISO 50001 energy management certifications for all its facilities, from Norway DNV, with implementation of the standard at 12 facilities in November alone. The company says that the energy management system will save about 5 percent of its energy spend, or 10 billion won ($9.5 million).

An ASTM committee has approved ASTM E2864, Test Method for Measurement of Airborne Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticle Surface Area Concentration in Inhalation Exposure Chambers Using Krypton Gas Adsorption. The standard provides steps to collect and analyze the surface area of airborne nanomaterials, which pose an inhalation exposure risk to workers and consumers.

ANSI says it will propose a collaborative to further define standardization needs for smart and sustainable cities, following a workshop on the topic in Washington, DC last month. The workshop identified a number of priority areas where standardization can contribute to smart and sustainable cities. These included system interoperability, key performance indicators, and resilience for disaster preparedness.

The US Green Building Council has approved the use of Green Advantage Certified Practitioners under the Green Advantage Field Personnel Standard as a LEED Innovation Credit for eligible projects under LEED v4. Registration is expected to open later this year.

Carrier Transicold‘s optional engine emissions system has received conditional verification from the California Air Resources Board, the company says. The CARB level 3+ verified diesel emissions control device can reduce diesel particulate mass from trailer refrigeration unit exhaust by more than 98 percent, Truckinginfo reports.

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Calif., has received three Green Globes (out of four) for its recently renovated retail store. The addition uses drought tolerant plants and its sprinklers have efficiency controls.
